Business Blogging

Attending the 2011 Hubspot User Group in Boston reinforced one of the easiest ways to boost traffic to your website: blogging. Blogging is not a term unknown to most people, in fact most people you know probably have a blog. But if your business isn’t currently making use of blogging to increase web traffic, then it’s probably something you should consider. Let’s discuss two common obstacles most people have with blogging for business.

What to talk about. It’s probably no problem for you to talk for hours about your business, and about why your business is so awesome, and why you’re better than any competitor, but ironically your business blog is not the place to toot your business horn. We've been guilty of including press releases and company info in our blog before as well, but a business blog is a place for readers to get useful information about your field and similar fields. For example, if your business makes soaps, instead of a blog post entitled “Our soaps are the best because they are organic” post an article that discusses how to make your own laundry detergent. The idea is to continue to bring your target customer  back to your site for free/useful information, this will in turn make them more likely to purchase or refer your product or service.

Still having trouble thinking of creative articles? Make a list of every question you’ve received from a customer, chances are there are other people online with the same question. You probably spend a good amount of time answering customer questions, start typing them up and you’ve got blog articles that will help bring people to your site.

Where to start if you’re not technically savvy. Even if you don’t manage your own website you can still setup a blog for your business and even publish to your company Facebook and Twitter. Sites like Blogger, Tumblr, and Wordpress are very user-friendly and are easy to customize. Posterous is another great blog platform that allows you to email in your content and/or photos and will post the article automatically. Your webmaster should be able to setup a link to intergrate your blog with your website. If you manage your site yourself the above options are still useful, or Hubspot also has a great blog tool that helps you to optimize your blog with keywords to get found.

And if you feel like you just don’t have the time to blog for your business, keep in mind that blogging can be an essential part of your sales and marketing plan which can bring business in the door. Everyone can agree that bringing business in the door is not something to put on the backburner. And remember, be consistent and be patient.
