Windows 7 End of Life

Windows 7

After 10 years as one of the most universally loved operating systems, Windows 7 End of Life (EoL) is taking place January 14, 2020. And if there’s one thing zombie season should teach us, it’s to know when it’s time to say goodbye.

Sure, Windows 7 brought new features, advancements, increased functionality and usability to users when it was released in October 2009. It sold a whopping 150 million copies by the following summer — making it the fastest-selling operating system in history at that time. But the world has changed dramatically in 10 years. Recognizing this, Microsoft answered the need for greater speed and security with the release of Windows 10 in 2015. However, nearly five years later, many are scarily still operating on Windows 7. With Microsoft moving forward to focus time and resources on newer technology, it’s time we follow suit.

Aside from Windows 10’s obvious advancements, new features and higher speed, increased security is our number-one reason for upgrading. Supporting two-factor authentication, increased data-loss prevention and hardware detection features, Windows 10 is a leap forward in network and data protection.

Here’s what you need to know about those PCs still using Windows 7 after January 14, 2020:

  • They will still operate.
  • Your business may become more vulnerable to hacking and viruses, especially if those PCs are connected or exposed to the public internet.
  • You will no longer be able to call tech support for help with Windows 7, as Microsoft will no longer offer it.
  • Microsoft will no longer provide software updates for Windows 7.
  • No security updates will be released for Windows 7, meaning no more patching of security holes within the OS.

In short, failure to upgrade will present a greater security and functionality risk to your business. Upgrading will ensure that you retain Microsoft’s full attention in terms of tech support and the latest security and software updates. The recommendation of both Liberty Technology and Microsoft is to let Windows 7 Rest In Peace, and enjoy the advanced security, compatibility, productivity, and deployment methods of Windows 10.
