Common Cloud Security Mistakes

A common practice for storing data is using the “cloud,” the system of internet-accessed storage, networking, software, and more. There are many services now offering space for all our files, programs, and applications, and this option has become critical to many individuals and businesses. This type of storage has plenty of advantages, such as remote access from different devices, the ability to share and collaborate on files, and reliable backup systems. However, even when using cloud storage, there can be several security risks if you don’t take the necessary precautions.

Here are some common cloud storage mistakes:

  • Using Unsecured Storage Containers – Security investigators often discover data stashed on cloud servers that isn’t private and well-secured. These vulnerable storage spaces can contain all sorts of private information, leading to various security issues. In order to keep your data safe, always be sure to lock your storage containers with any of your service’s security options.
  • Relying on SMS MFA to Secure an Account – When you choose a security measure such as Short Message Service (SMS) Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), the general assumption is that no one else will have access to your data. However, the problem is that this type of security measure is easily compromised. Another common issue is that most cloud apps don’t even offer an MFA option.
  • Not Monitoring Remote Access Users – Cloud servers typically allow for remote access in various ways. Unfortunately, all of your data can be jeopardized. With the right credentials and weak passwords, hackers can get inside your storage and remotely access your files and documents. Always monitor everyone who’s accessing your cloud, ensuring no one is there who shouldn’t be.
  • Improperly Storing Passwords – Passwords should be secured and stored safely. Writing them down on a sticky note or in a Word document is dangerous. Keep your passwords strong and use a service that safely stores them for quick and secure access.
  • Not Patching Servers – It’s easy to overlook that most cloud servers won’t update themselves to the latest versions, especially with the “add-and-forget” aspect of cloud storage. Unpatched servers (servers that have been updated to have vulnerabilities addressed) with outdated software are often easily attacked. Always check your cloud service for updates that will keep your data safe.
